Autism is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder. It is a chronic disorder that follows the individual throughout their life and is characterized by great phenotypic heterogeneity and comorbidity.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In the literature, the term Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or autistic spectrum disorders is used. Based on the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), both childhood autism and atypical autism are included in the autism spectrum disorders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The diagnostic criteria concern three areas: social interaction, communication (verbal and non-verbal) and restricted, stereotypically repetitive behavior. More specifically, there is an absence of social initiative and difficulties in maintaining social relationships. Children on the spectrum do not understand social conventions, as a result of which they are unable to adapt their behavior accordingly. Speech may not develop at all or may not be proportional to the child’s chronological age. It is rarely accompanied by basic communication skills (eye contact and joint attention), paralinguistic elements (e.g. prosody) and gestures or facial expressions. Finally, these children usually exhibit motor and\/or verbal repetitive behaviors (e.g. rotating objects, irregular shaking of the head, hands, direct or indirect reproduction of what others say) that significantly limit their behavioral repertoire.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n
During development, some symptoms can change, as can the level of functioning (low, moderate and high). Early diagnosis combined with the initiation of intensive stable treatments contribute decisively to the development of the disorder. Support for children on the autism spectrum focuses on strengthening communication, social interaction and understanding of the environment. Interventions are adapted to the needs of each child and include the development of verbal and non-verbal ways of expression, strengthening attention and emotional connection with others. Through creative, interactive activities, children acquire life skills, improve their daily lives and are empowered in school and social integration, in an environment of acceptance and stability.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
